What is the difference between gifts and spiritual gifts? Is the difference only that the first isn’t preceded by the word ‘spiritual’ while the later is? What makes one gift spiritual and the other not?
Let’s take for example Tiger Woods. Even after the shocking allegations of his prolific sexual behaviour, people still think that he is a great golfer; the best in our time, if not of all time. Nobody could doubt his ‘giftedness’ in playing golf. But would anyone call his gift in playing golf as spiritual? I wouldn’t (although I would call it a ‘miracle’, but that’s another issue).

Welcoming the visitorKenmore Uniting Church in Queensland recently ran a 10 session course offered by the Pilgrim Learning Community called 'The Hospitality of God: Studies in the Gospel of Luke'. The course followed Brendan Byrne’s book of the same name. Heather den Houting and participants of Pilgrim Learning Community’s 'Hospitality of God' course explore how true hospitality is less about over-catering and more about abundance. Like most Christian people I know who are under 40, none of us really like the idea of going to church. Sentiments like I’m spiritual or I’m a Christian just not religious are more common than not. My friends and I did not slowly drift from church as we drifted from our faith. On the contrary, it was as we took our faith more seriously we found it harder to continue going to church.
As I sat and ate my jelly lollies I gazed at a packet which claimed to be “all natural”. How farcical it is that we get excited about lollies which are supposedly ‘natural’? I turned the packet over to discover this all natural product included grape skin extract, paprika oleoresin and turmeric. How natural is that?
The grandparent says to the child, playfully, “You’re so good, I could eat you!” Is it possible to express the bond between Jesus Christ and the Christian Church in such an emotive way?
Relationships are not easy. We can offend someone by saying something without realising that it hurt their feelings.
I majored in dance but knew I wanted to be helpful in the world. Is dancing helpful? The more I pondered this question, the murkier my vision became. I was overcome by fits of gloom. Anytime I went to church or sang a hymn, I’d weep.
